Exploring Morocco's Enchanting Rose Valley and the Majestic Dunes of Erg Chebbi - Brief Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Marrakesh: Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be transferred to your Riad, situated in the heart of the historic Medina in Marrakesh.
Day 2: Marrakesh Sightseeing: Our morning begins with a guided tour, where we'll explore Marrakesh, a city that has long been a crossroads for Berber mountain dwellers and desert people from the south • We'll start with the iconic Koutoubia Mosque, visit the stunning tombs renowned for their beauty and explore the Bahia Palace and museum • Our day ends in the bustling Jemaa el Fna, a labyrinth of vibrant bazaars, majestic palaces and awe-inspiring mosques.
Day 3: Marrakesh to Taberkhacht: In the morning, we'll journey through the High Atlas Mountains, traversing the highest mountain pass in Morocco, Col Tichka, at 2260m • We'll pass through colorful valleys, observe shepherds with their flocks and explore Berber villages • As we reach the southern side of the Atlas, the landscape dramatically shifts to a semi-arid terrain • After visiting Ouarzazate, we'll travel along the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, where each oasis town boasts a unique character • In the afternoon, we'll arrive at the village of Taberkhacht, nestled in the heart of the stunning Rose Valley with its diverse, colorful landscape.
Day 4: Taberkhacht to Boutghrar (5h30 walk): From Taberkhacht, we'll embark on a leisurely hike through the High Atlas Mountains •We'll meet our mule team, who will accompany us for the next few days. As we traverse the valley, we'll visit Berber villages, lush green fields and a series of Kasbahs • In April and May, the valley is awash in delicate pink hues as the roses bloom • After a picnic lunch under shady walnut trees, we'll arrive at the village of Boutghrar in the afternoon.
Day 5: Boutghrar to Rbat N’Ait Hamd: Today, we'll cross verdant fields and clay villages on our way to El Hot, where we'll visit a beautiful Kasbah, enjoy panoramic views of the valley and sip tea on a terrace • We'll continue to Agouti for a picnic lunch, then traverse the Agouti Gorges and reach the northern part of the valley, offering breathtaking views of the Central High Atlas.
Day 6: Rbat N’Ait Hamd to Ighrem Akdim (5h walk): After breakfast, we'll journey through a desert plateau before arriving at Ighrem Akdim, one of the most picturesque villages in the Mgoun Valley • Once settled in our guesthouse, we'll tour the village, meet locals and learn about their daily lives.
Day 7: Ighrem Akdim to Ait Youl (5h30 walk): On our final day trekking through the High Atlas Mountains, we'll witness the landscape gradually become dry and desert-like • We'll walk along the J'Bel Riguit and traverse a stunning arid landscape • There may be an opportunity to visit a nomadic family living in caves, sharing memorable moments and tea with them.
Day 8: Ait Youl to Toudgha Gorge to Merzouga: We'll drive to the breathtaking Toudgha Valley, a lush green oasis alongside a deep gorge. After a pleasant walk through the oasis and gorge • We'll continue to the Ziz Valley, dotted with palm trees, fortified villages and Berber farming communities • We'll pass through Erfoud, known for its fossils and high-quality dates, before reaching Merzouga, where we'll spend the night in a Kasbah hotel near the dunes.
Day 9: Merzouga to Hassi Merdani (4-hour walk): After breakfast, we'll load our camels and meet our handlers for an adventure through the Erg Chebbi sand dunes • Our caravan will lead us to our camp, situated amidst the vast dune landscape. After lunch at the camp • We'll hike to the highest dune to witness a magical sunset before returning to our camp for the night.
Day 10: Hassi Merdani to Hassi Labyad: On our final day of hiking, we'll embark on a 4-hour trek across the Erg Chebbi dunes, a massive expanse of sand that stretches for kilometers • We'll navigate the towering dunes, some reaching over 100 meters in height, before arriving at our hotel at the foot of the dunes for the night.
Day 11: Merzouga to Draa Valley to Ait Benhadou: We'll leave Merzouga and journey to the magnificent Draa Valley, passing through desert plains dotted with tamarisk trees • We'll visit Alnif, Tazarine, and Nkoub, the land of the nomadic Ait Atta tribe, before reaching Agdz • As we drive through the volcanic Jebel Saghro mountains, we'll visit Ouarzazate, the city of cinema and continue to Ait Benhadou.
Day 12: Ait Benhadou to Marrakesh: We'll explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ait Benhaddou, a well-preserved Kasbah that has served as the backdrop for many Hollywood movies •This former fortress stronghold was an important stop on the old Salt Road caravan routes, where traders brought gold, ivory and salt from sub-Saharan Africa to Marrakesh and beyond • We'll return to the vibrant city of Marrakesh via the Atlas Mountains.
Day 13: Marrakesh (Free Day): Enjoy a free day in Marrakesh to explore the city at your leisure, relax, or shop for souvenirs.
Day 14: Departure from Marrakesh: You will be transferred to the Marrakesh airport for your departure, concluding your memorable journey through Morocco.
